Most common is the addition of NaOH (caustic soda) which caused
"saponification" (a blending of the chemical to the fat content)
I can't recall the exact reaction, but this waqs used commonly used about
100 yrs ago when the early setrtlers made their own, "Grannie's Lye Soap".
When it had set, they cut into blocks, for use. Lye is the continental
term for Caustic soda.Cheers/73
