Generally, I find Maplin weak for transistors and IC's of interest to
constructors.
The best two sources of transistors I've found are:
1) Grandata Ltd,

K range, as well as lots of IC's and other spares for TV's, VCR's, HI Fi
etc.
the 2N5484 is listed by Grandata at 55p each, plus 1.00 P&P plus VAT.

This firm are especially good as a source for obsolete transistors and
I.C's.
The 2N5484 listed at 85p plus P&P plus VAT.
