*The envelope, please. There's nothing like finding letters in the mail-
box. Especially boxfulls at a time. Day after day. That's what we need at
this time of year to make sure we have the latest info on everyone who will
(and, alas, those who won't) be back on this season. An unprecedented 17
beacons, some long-established, won't be. As it turns out, though, additions
in the last few months are keeping the active database about the same size.
We wish the new operators much success!
*One consistent thread in reader correspondence has been the need to
know who is actually operating. It has been the policy of my predecessors
and myself to include only those beacons we reasonably believe to be operating
at least some of the time. But by an odd coincidence, the entire lot of us
have suffered from the same disability: we all seem to be telepathically-
impaired. Therefore, we have to depend on operators for their schedules, and
on loggings and "spies" to fill in the gaps.
In my tenure, I've allowed a very few beacon listings to ride year 'round,
even though their operators never contact me or answer my requests for
information. (I suspect these are the ones about whom correspondents mutter
darkly for never QSLing, too, so I don't feel discriminated against.) They
were reported by reliable sources during the season, at least, so they stayed
in print.
However, it has become clear that this policy doesn't serve readers'
needs as well as I hoped. So, from now on, a listing here means exactly one
of two things: the operator has announced his intended schedule to us, or a
listener has reported reception within the past few months. My earnest
thanks go to those who help us keep the listings up! It's the only way to
serve both beacon operators and listeners.
