RESOURCES FOR LONGWAVE ACTIVITIES:
THE LONGWAVE CLUB OF AMERICA
c/o Bill Oliver
45 Wildflower Road
Levittow, PA 19057
The LWCA is a great organization consisting of hundreds of members,
mostly in the USA; it was formed in "1974 to promote DXing and
experimenting on frequencies below 530 kHz and activity on the 1750 meter
band." Their monthly publication, the LOWDOWN, is essential reading for
anyone interested in longwave! The LOWDOWN includes reports of loggings,
activities of 1750 meter band stations, changes in NDB operations, MF
beacon activities, reports of QSLs received, and more! Membership in LWCA
and one-year subscription to the LOWDOWN is $18.00 in the USA;
remittances in U.S. funds (such as check to LWCA) to the above address.
THE LOW AND MEDIUM FREQUENCY RADIO SCRAP BOOK, 8th Edition (20th
Anniversary Issue), 1992. This is a must-have compilation of proven
designs and schematics for receiving and transmitting devices and
accessories from the medium frequency to the audio frequency range.
Contains rules for license-free operation on the 160-190 kHz and the
510-1705 kHz bands. Obtainable for $17.50 postpaid book rate for USA and
Canada (U.S. Funds only); checks or money orders payable to Ken Cornell,
225 Baltimore Avenue, Pt. Pleasant Bch., NJ 08742.
ASSOCIATION OF DX REPORTERS (ADXR), 7008 Plymouth Rd, Baltimore, MD
21208. This club has a good monthly bulletin (DX REPORTER) which contains a
"Long Wave" column and a "BCB (AM, FM & TV) DXing" column. These feature
loggings and other news. U.S. dues (includes bulletin) are $19.00 (or send
$1 or 5 IRCs for sample bulletin); send to above address.
THE AERO/MARINE BEACON GUIDE, 1990 Edition, Edited by Ken Stryker,
Compiled by Joe Woodlock. This is THE DEFINITIVE GUIDE to NDB DXing! It
lists more than 7500 beacons in the Americas, Caribbean, Pacific, and
Australasia. The main listing, by frequency, is suppleented by a valuable
cross listing by ID. Information in the main listing includes ID
/call, country, state, location, coordinates, miscellaneous info, watts,
and elevation. Includes several articles covering such matters as
propagation, QSLing, and DXing strategies. Available (in USA) by sending
$15.00 to Ken Stryker, 2856-G West Touhey Ave., Chicago, IL 60645.
The 1993 updater is included with this 1990 edition (the updater is
also available separately for $3.00, postpaid.)
MONITORING TIMES, P.O. Box 98, Brasstown, NC 28902-0098. This monthly
magazine has a column called "Below 500 kHz", which covers a refreshing
variety of topics relating to longwave operations. Also, there are
occasional feature articles on longwave in this magazine.
CURRY COMMUNICATIONS, 737 North Fairview Street, Burbank, CA 91505, phone
(818) 846-0617. This company supplies kits for longwave and 1750 meter
band. If you want to get "on the air" and don't want to homebrew your
rig, but wouldn't mind building a kit, then how about a 1750 meter CW
transceiver kit for $89.00 postpaid! (Model CW893). Ask for a catalog
of all their products!
THE NORTHERN OBSERVER and THE WESTERN UPDATE are now-defunct monthly
publications dealing with longwave, primarily with 1750 meter band operations.
he back issues contain some good info, including construction articles/schematics.
TRANSMITTING ANTENNAS AND GROUND SYSTEMS FOR 1750 METERS, Edited by
Michael Mideke, 1987. This is a nice collection of 60 pages of articles
appearing originally in club newsletters or bulletins.
LOW-FREQUENCY RECEIVING TECHNIQUES: BUILDING AND USING VLF ANTENNAS,
copyright 1984 by Gernsback Publications, Inc. (Obtained through the
publishers of Radio-Electronics magazine). This is a collection of
articles, about 30 pages, from Radio-Electronics magazine, covering
active antennas, loop antennas, and passive tuners.
THE DESIGN OF BROAD-BAND VLF RECEIVERS WITH AIR-CORE LOOP ANTENNAS,
copyright 1988 by Evans W. Paschal. This is a very technical treatment of
receiver design, obtained as an 89-page manuscript from the author. It
does include actual schematics; I haven't tried building anything from
these yet!
Various magazines have occasional longwave articles; some good ones have
appeared in QST, 73 Amateur Radio Today, CQ, and Popular Communications.
