I heard a couple of things on TV a year or so ago.
In one prog: since much repeated, it mentioned that, prior to 1400 there
was a much milder climate.
That might explain why Robin Hood and his merrry men could spend the
winter in Sherwood Forest without dying of hypothermia.
After 1400 there was a sudden drop of 2 deg in the average temperature.
How they measured this when thermometers hadn't been invented, I don't
know, probably through soil samples and doing things with tree rings and
other archaeological stuff.

This drop in temp caused a huge famine as crops which had once thrived, no
longer grew - many died.

This probably explains the popularity of the potato when it was imported
from the New World, with it's ability to grow almost anywhere.

Britain stayed cold until the end of the 19th century during which there
were fairs held around christmas on the frozen river Thames when people
would light fires and roast chestnuts to sell to people out skating etc.

The Thames has never frozen in the 20th century. Some will probably say it
was because of global warming caused by all those dark, satanic mills and
factory chimneys. I just don't know.

But what caused the warming before 1400 ?
