Hi Michael, now there is an interesting point here when you mention bush
fires. In this state in spite of the screams from the greens our forest
authorities do prescribed burns in the forest to stop the accumulation of
ground rubbish, leaves etc which could cause real problems should it catch
fire. The result is that although this state has huge forest reserves as
big as the smaller states we have not had a seriously destructive fire in
the forest for many years . There have been fires lit by lightning but
that is a cause that will always exist, but there has not been loss of
property or life in the forest regions and the fires that have started
have been controlled..

The forest on the Darling Range and further south is 300 miles long and
over 200 miles wide. That is a huge area. We are told that the prescribed
burns are the reason for the lack of dangerous fires. There has been loss
of housing and bush land in the Darling Range jarrah forest area in the
hills above Perth but prescribed burns are not carried out there.Obviously
where people have built housing in bushland you can't do a prescribed
burn, and so some lose their houses as happened this year..

I saw a report from either NSW or Victoria (can't remember which)
suggesting that if prescribed burning had been carried out in the forest
areas in those states the devastating fires experienced last year could
not have been so serious. I know there were other conditions such as high
winds and very high temperatures, conditions which are not usual in those
areas. This is not my story, it was reported on the TV news. However the
green faction will not hear of prescribed burning taking place.

I don't know where climate change comes into this. Maybe our climate is
becoming hotter and drier but there has not been any sign of a change like
that where I am, and the sea has not risen.. We have had the wettest end
to winter for about 60 years and the coldest. It remains to be seen what
next winter will be like.

I don't think anyone knows the real story or how far climate change will
go.

The carbon credits thing is stuck in our Parliament and noone knows quite
what will happen there yet.
Cheers,
Bob VK6BE.

>Yes saying Global warming is a bit misleading. "Climate change" is better.
A better explanation is wilder extreams of climate. Hence more hurricanes
& stronger ones for Florida & more bushfires & dryer summers in Australia.

The NZ Government is putting through new carbon credits & taxes to "fix
the problem". All I know is that it is going to cost more to live as the
cost is passed on in the household bills. I don't see how it helps "fix
things" apart from my not being able to afford to go on holiday or heat my
house in the winter.
