So if one is using a TH-D7 in a yacht, how would that be with SSID?
Anyway, I am using a TH-D7 and a power amplifier on board our yacht; I
keep the SSID -7 to distinguish from other APRS stations that I am
running, but I select the (sailing)yacht icon from the D7 menu.
I don't know how one is changing symbol settings in the VX8.
Anyway, as this group is concerning itself with UI-View rather than
with particular transciever models running as standalone stations
(with or without a GPS), discussions around how to setup such
standalone stations shouldn't be taken here.
If you use your VX-8 with UI-View, you will have to set up your VX-8
in a way that allows UI-View to take control over what is transmitted.

You might have an old symbol set (the one that goes with the orignal
distribution file set of UI-View, now five years old). Look at
Stephen's web pages http://wa8lmf.net/aprs/APRS_symbols.htm for the
latest symbol set.

In Denmark we use this SSID It has been discussed, which SSID should be
used for which type of APRS station and the following conclusion could be reached:
In Denmark we use this SSID SSID -0 (no SSID) should be used for all fixed stations (home-qth) SSID -1 should be used for all sorts of gateways (IGATE, Sat-Gate, HF-Gate and so on) SSID -2 should be used for APRS-WIDE-Digipeater (which are digipeaters with aliases of ( WIDEn-n) SSID -3 should be used for APRS-FILL-IN-digipeaters (aliases of WIDE1-1 only) SSID -4 2nd fixed stations (2nd Home-qth) SSID -5 should be used for WX stations SSID -6 unassigned SSID -7 should be used for special mobile stations (truck, bicycle, motorbike, Jeep, bus, RCV ect., NOT for normal cars) SSID -8 should be used for fixed, portable stations SSID -9 should be used for normal cars SSID -10 should be used for Sat-stations (using APRS via satellite) SSID -11 should be used for TCPIP stations SSID -12 balloon SSID -13 unassigned SSID -14 truck 18 Wheels SSID -15 SW This is only a proposal for all hams, which should help to clear up APRS a little bit. 73 DE OZ1IEP/OZ0CAB-7 CARL ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan, LA2BBA" <la2bba(AT)nrrl.no> To: <ui-view(AT)yahoogroups.com>

Symbol control via SSID has long been obsolete! This is a DEPRECATED
technique.
It dates back to a period before dedicated APRS-aware hardware and
software existed. When APRS began in the early 1990's, trackers
consisted of a serial GPS fed into the (one-and-only) serial port of a
standard packet TNC. The TNC, in conversational mode, would transmit the
raw NMEA data from the GPS as-is. There was no way to modify or add to
the GPS data stream, so one couldn't embed any kind of control codes for
symbols.
The "kludge" expedient of varying the SSID of the originator's call was
introduced to allow the selection of a very limited number of symbols
was introduced.
Today, APRS-aware specialized hardware such as TinyTraks and Kenwood
radios, and programs like UIview, reformat the GPS data string before
transmission (drastically shortening it), and embed control codes for
HUNDREDS of symbols (with or without overlaid numbers or letters) in the
position data. See
<http://wa8lmf.net/aprs/APRS_symbols.htm>
for details of how this is done. *The SSID codes are now history*.
FURTHER, if an APRS packet has both an SSID -and- embedded symbol
control codes, the embedded codes ALWAYS take precedence when processed
by APRS software at the receiving end. Thus, worrying about the SSID on
a packet generated by UIview or a TH-D7 is a complete waste of time --
it is completely ignored.

I understand from over on the VX-8 support list that the TNC isn't
brought out to the outside world, so I don't think that would be
possible.

OK; so that would mean that there is no way to connect UI-View with a
VX-8.
The original poster mightn't have installed the revised symbol file
set with his UI-View, as we both suggested yesterday.

That could be it. I just ran the installer I got from the current download site. Apart from adding some maps, I haven't done anything else to it.

The UIview install package hasn't been updated since the death of it's
author nearly 5 years ago. More and more factory defaults are becoming
invalid, and need to be changed after the initial install. See my webpage
<http://wa8lmf.net/aprs/UIview_Notes.htm>
for details of the changes and updates required.

Does anyone in the group happen to have a manual for the ol' Magellan Nav
5000 Pro GPS receiver? An electronic copy would be fine or if you have a
hard copy please reply directly to me (off the reflector). Yes, I'm aware
Magellan has a manual online for the Nav 5000DLX but the two models don't
operate the same. Wouldn't it be nice though if a Nav 5000 Pro could be
upgraded to a Nav 5000DLX.
