UI-View PHG settings (suggested for ZL) Saturday, 30 August 2008

                                                       de ZL1ABS

How to the have a PHG value in UI-View to make the beacons more compatible
with other APRS programs that can use Power-Height-Gain to display a
"Range circle" for your station. It is very useful if your station is a
fill-in digipeater responding to WIDE1-1 and/or RELAY, etc (see your
UI-View digipeater settings & consult with other local APRS mode
operators). If your station is a well situated station acting as a main
WIDEn-n digipeater for the local area, then PHG will be more useful to
anyone wanting to see where there might be some APRS mode radio coverage
from your station.

Example APRS beacon for the Southern hemisphere:

ZL1KD>APU25N,WIDE2-2!3645.40S/17442.12E#PHG5020/144.575 MHz Taupo

The format is Latitude/Longitude/ Symbol/PHG/Power of TX/Height above
average terrain/aerial gain/Frequency of port/Comment (QTH or local voice
calling channel etc)

The example above says:
Latitude 36"45"40 South
Longitude 174"42"12 East
APRS Symbol # = Digipeater (Star) (UI-View selects the symbol from a drop
down list)
PHG5020
5 = 25 Watts TX power (the number is the square root of the TX power)
0 = 10 Feet Height above average terrain (not absolute height above sea
level)
2 = 2dB aerial gain (figure in dB & must always be 1 or more)
0 = Omni directional aerial (other numbers are for direction aerials &
shaded locations)
Frequency (useful as it may vary for local ZL situations) = 144.575 MHz
Comment = Taupo (QTH) + (may include a voice calling channel if wanted)

To produce the above in UI-View select

Setup menu

Station setup

Beacon command box, type the following information:

PHG5020/144.575 MHz Taupo

Adapt the PHG numbers to suit your station & your local frequency & any
other small information you might want sent. Some stations add "QSO
146.475" meaning they are listening for voice contacts on 146.475 MHz.

Click OK button to finish.

This applies equally to UI-View 2.39 (16 bit) & UI-View 2.03 (32 bit)
programs.

Results of PHG may be seen on the internet at the aprs.fi site.
If you click the little box with the red circle on the right hand side of
the map display (once you've logged in), the range circle will appear for
any station you select (if they send PHG). Selecting the "last 24 hours"
option might be useful, if the station doesn't send their PHG beacon too
often.
