I would suspect that you are now using UI-View32.

The default setting for UI-View32 is to have APRS enabled as opposed to
the original UI-View(32) extensions.

Click on Setup - APRS compatibility and press F1. All the information is
there.

The difference, as you have already noticed, is that using the APRS
protocol only one ping is sent. If you enable the UI-View(32) extensions
then six pings will be sent.

There are many other differences between the two protocols but I'll leave
you to read the Help files for that.    :-)
