There has been a lot on American amateur radio web sites and in US radio
magazines about the problems 70cms repeaters have been causing to the PAVE
PAWS radar stations in the US. Some severe restrictions have been imposed
on some US repeaters.

The PAVE PAWS sites have been in operation for many years without the 70cms
amateur operations causing a problem until recently. Given that the
amateurs haven't changed what they've been doing the inference has to be
that the PAVE PAWS has changed or is being used differently. The US
military hasn't admitted to any changes in operation or equipment. A shame
that the primary contractor didn't keep its mouth shut when it made press
releases about the work it was doing on PAVE PAWS UPGRADES. But that is by
the by.

I see today that that nice Mr. Brown is going to allow the US to use the
spying base at Menwith Hill as part of the US missile defence shield. As
part of the agreement it was announced that the UK's PAVE PAWS system at
Flyingdales had been upgraded and this new equipment would be turned on
next month.

With that in mind will we see similar events as in California unfolding for
amateurs in the Yorkshire region or will we be lucky this time and not be
affected by US military posturing.
