A Forgotten African Tragedy?-UFO Casebook FilesA Forgotten African
tragedy?
Written by James J. Bjaloncik
My interest and involvement in the subject of unidentified flying
objects
came in grade school in the late 1950's and early 1960's, stimulated by
the great and near-great sci-fi movies of the 50's. I soon found a
source
for such information in a local radio program.
Cleveland (Ohio) radio station KYW 1100AM, (since renamed a number of
times and now back to its original call of WTAM), offered a talk show at
10 PM. during the week, hosted by local personality Harv Morgan.
Originally named "Program PM", it eventually became "Harv Morgan:
Contact!".
While covering a large number of subjects, Morgan would do, on about a
once a month basis, a program on UFOs, having the local head of the
Cleveland Ufology Project, Earl Neff, and nationally known investigator
C.Wesley Fitch, on the show, along with other Ufologists.
It led to my accumulating a significant library of UFO books and
magazines, including the original Ruppelt "Report on Unidentified Flying
Objects", the original Condon Report, and its rebuttal by Saunders and
Harkins, the Dell Magazine and TRUE magazine publications, and works by
the Lorenzens, Palmer, Le Poeur Trench, Michel, Vallee, Binder and
others.
One story that has haunted me to this day occurred during one of the
Morgan broadcasts. One of the guests (whose name is forgotten to me
now),
alluded to an incident that occurred in Africa in the early 1950's. A
young African boy, acting as a shepherd, was tending his flock one night
near a village where a wedding celebration was going on. He returned to
his home at a nearby village when he spotted a bright object standing
motionless over the celebrating village, where the sounds of voices and
drums could be heard. Light beams came down from the object and suddenly
the village was silent.
The boy was then told the following morning that the entire population
of
the village, including livestock, had been found "burned to death."
Horrified by the story, I began to search (by my own meager means),
newspaper accounts at Cleveland Public Library's main branch for such a
story, but I came up empty handed.
Over the years, I would occasionally remember this story, and do some
further investigating, only to find nothing. Back in the early 1990's,
with the appearance of the TV show "The X-Files," and the introduction
and Expansion of the Internet, I began searching again. I finally found
the story in one of Jacques Vallee's books, "Confrontations"
(pp.129-130).Unfortunately, Vallee does not reference the source of the
story.
The story continued to plague me on and off for years until just
recently.A chance search of the Internet pointed to a reference in the
1967 Brad Steiger/Joan Whritenour book "Flying Saucers Are Hostile". I
was stunned to find the book in my library. The incident (pp.16-17) reads
as follows:
"In June, 1954, an eleven-year-old African boy was wondering about "the
strange thing" that attacked an entire village! For several nights Laili
Thindu and his companions, while tending flocks of goats and sheep and
sleeping outdoors on the outskirts of the village of Kirimukuyu, watched
strange lights on Mt. Kenya.
At first, the boys theorized that mountain climbers were working on an
ascent of the mountain by night and carrying huge torches. When the
lights soared into space, the boys' theories began to take on a more
supernatural coloration.
One night, as Laili Thindu lay in his crude hut, he could hear the drums
of a nearby village throbbing joyously at a tribal marriage ceremony. He
became perplexed when the odd lights left Mt. Kenya and hovered over the
village, beaming down bright rays. The drums were suddenly silenced.
The next morning, Laili Thindu learned that all the dancers, all the
children, all the livestock - had been seared to death by terrible
burning streams of light from glowing objects. It was not until Laili
ventured to Nairobi to tell his story to someone who recognized the tale
for what it really was:
"The annihilation of an African village by an UFO."
A chilling story, one that appears to have slipped through the cracks of
Ufology. But why? Is it a fabricated story? Certainly a hoax would have
been discovered and a disclaimer issued, but other than what appears to
be the initial report by Steiger and Whritenour (who also offered no
reference for the story), reproduced by Vallee, and the person on the
radio show, nothing more has ever appeared.
Who is (or was) Laili Thindu? Has the story officially been "squelched"?
I've been in contact with Harry Challenger of the British "Flying Saucer
Review", who has access to the extensive files of "UFO Afrinews", a
compilation of African UFO reports covered over many years by the late
investigator Cynthia Hinde. At this point, no news on the incident has
been forth-coming from that source.

Ceiba, Puerto Rico A Large Circular Light
Date: 1985
Time: Approx: 4:00 p.m.
Number of witnesses: 1
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Just a large circular light.
Weather Conditions: Clear and sunny.
Description: Sitting in vehicle facing a hill at a stop sign just having
driven off of United States Naval Air Station Roosevelt Roads. A large flash
catches my eye about 2 stories up in the sky. No solid object is visible. It
flashes on and off quickly in a steady line horizontally until it can no
longer be seen. The light is a white-blue colour. Cars stopped on the highway
briefly to watch it go past. It was very bright and very large. About the
width of two vehicles.

Forster, New South Wales A Triangle of Lights
Date: 1988
Time: 10:30 p.m.
Number of witnesses: 1
Number of objects: 1
Shape of objects: Triangle of Lights.
Weather Conditions: Clear Thousands of stars.
Description: Really clear night, was on pebbly beach looking over ocean. I saw
out to sea a triangle of lights appear rotating green, red, orange thought was
some strange boat but then it flew across the water at great speed in seconds,
then it shot into sky like a flare. Sat there, then came back down on angle to
its original spot forming like a triangle in the sky, then it flew across
again like it was going to do it again and again. It shot into the sky but
this time it sat there for a little longer then shot of at an angle out to
space and disappeared. This happened in 1988 when I was 15, never reported it
thought no one would listen then. 10yrs later I heard on local radio of a
milkman that reported the same triangle of lights out to sea doing the same
moves. I only ever told a few friends and still did not report as people would
think I copied and not seen it first.
