Hi Ian and all,

Good grief man, where have you been??? When the series Enterprise began
there was quite a packet discussion on ablative hull plating in which I
thorouly explained it. My rhetorical question was why did the writers
choose such an incorrect term for the "shields"?

Right, spacecraft designed for reentry have been using abative heat
shielding from the beginning which puzzled the heck out of me since such
would be quite useless in a "ray cannon" attack. The shielding would be
ablated until the hull was breached, KABOOM, bye bye Enterprise.

Now you can't blame ceramic heat shielding for the latest shuttle mishap,
it's been working well since the first Mercury mission. It's rather well
known that a series of blunders and miscommunication similar to the
events leading to the Challenger explosion was the cause. A bit of
insulation on the main fuel tank impacted the wing and damaged it which
led to the engress of plasma upon reentry. Had NASA had a working brain
between them they would have sent up a rescue mission or at least had the
crew inspect the craft to see what happened to the impacted area.

As for regular inspections, each craft is thoroughly gone over upon
landing and any needed maintenence performed. It's simply the fact that
they pooh-poohed IRREGULAR inspection and ignored repeated warnings that
caused both disasters. As for the Russians, they had plenty of problems
of their own like a cabin vent opening prematurely which suffocated the
Cosmonauts upon reentry. Now THAT was a blunder for you, had they been
wearing proper suits it would never have happened, but they were sent up
without them to save space rather than building a bigger cabin for the
space capsule. Yeah, everyone makes mistakes, but the dumbest ones seem
to cause the most damage.

Well, at least they don't have Q to contend with! (;->)
