Many stupid tales were around regarding "UFO"s ("Unidentified", but taken
and understood by the "faithful" and consequently many, to mean "Flying
saucers") crashing and its "atomic engine" exploding, causing the damage.
"It must have been a nuclear explosion to turn the sand into glass" was
one famous (Stupid) comment that I recall. Yet another example of man's
propensity to attribute peculiar explanations to otherwise "normal"
incidents.

I do vividly recall seeing (Moving and still) pictures of the vast areas
of forestation literally "snapped" like matchsticks as the object blazed a
trail through them. It had to be a fantastic event of that there is NO
doubt. The vast hole in the desert (I forget the name) is another. The
meteor is said to be buried in one side of the crater.
