Sodium deuteroxide exists as colourless crystals. It's a bit hygroscopic
though! In addition when cooled and under pressure, hydrogen and deuterium
solidify and behave like a metal.

So mining deuterium compounds does not sound as wrong as it might at first.

Anyway I thought it was dilithium crystals that they used. 

Whoa! Reality check... tell me I'm not responding to something someone has
written about Star Trek. Oooh, I need a rest :-)
