Hello David, and other TPK'ers.

Well, some times I do have more things to look for, than I can handle ;-)
From time to time I forget to make the answers I wanted to do and then find
the bull mutch later, when I'm doing a cleaning in my BBS-list (I have
lowered the list from 3500 to 2500 mails in the last month!).

>In all the years I have used TPK I have _N_O_T_ experienced a problem
>having included 'BR MSG_PRIV E K' in my CONFIG.TPK however I bow to B›rge's
>experience and now disclaim any onus.

I have had several overwritings in my MSG_PRIV list, because of this little
bug in TPK. I haven't testet 183 for the bug yet, but I have found it in
both 181 and 182....

>Well being one who likes to test all eventualities I tried it. I shouted at
>TPK to 'hurry up!' because I wanted to go out. Made no diffence as it still
>took just as long to shut down (exit).

A little misunderstanding. Shouting at TPK gives no BUG. By busynes I ment
something like closing down TPK, whitout waiting for rewerseforward of
personal messages already listed in your MSG_PRIV.LST.

>I came back later and started
>up TPK again and found no corruption. I am co-sysop of the BBS here and
>logged on and found I had not missed or lost forwarding of any personal
>mail, curious? But then I know that TPK does _N_O_T_ call CONFIG.TPK on
No, but at start up, and that is close enough!
>close down. I had mail tagged for fowarding and when TPK was restarted it
Any killed mail, to give the bug?
>was still tagged for fowarding (collection). I would be interested to hear
>more B›rge and look into this further
>because I would never wish to give information that would mislead
>or do any harm.

You'll get the information here, as a sysop you should have no problem
making the test at all, but everyone can do it.
First a little bit about the FOrward command:

When you have taged mail to recieve and killed mail in both lists, send FO
to TPK and you will get something like this i return:

Forward cyklus hver 20m ................... TIMEREN=2154
Beskeder at modtage: <<<<means mail to recieve:>>>>
ÚÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄ¿

Take a look at the last numbers called #Idx. Then send the cleanup
commands:

BR RXMSG OZ2BOB E K
Antal af Msg Headers fra OZ2BOB............ 1410

BR RXMSG MSG_PRIV E K
Antal af Msg Headers fra MSG_PRIV............ 497

Then send the FO again:

Forward cyklus hver 20m ................... TIMEREN=1941
Beskeder at modtage:
ÚÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄÄÄÂÄÄÄÄ¿

Do you see the change in the OZ2BOB-BBS list and not in the MSG_PRIV list?
The Idx# at 499 is higher than the count of lines at 497 in the MSG_PRIV.
This is what is giving you the MSG_PRIV-BUG, because the mail will be
written 2 lines higher than before, and then owerwrite the mail at line 495!

And now for the test:

At the BBS, make at least 3 test mail (I made 12, from my node to me!),
with the same content as the subject (to prove the overwriting!). Now make
a syncro, to get the mail into your MSG_PRIV.LST and start the forward by
typing FO E. After recieving 2/3 of the mails (2 out of 3 or 8 out of 12)
stop the fwd by pressing ESC and go to the list and read the recieved
mails. You will now find some mail containing the same text as the title.
And now for the bad thing: KILL the first 1/3 of the testmails, leave the
list, send BR MSG_PRIV E K and restart the FWD. When you have finished the
FWD and enter the list, it will look something like this:

Y6184 P 543 OZ4STA SCAN7 950326 SCAN7 Job Report 26-03-95
Y6185 P 1067 OZ4STA EPURME 950326 EPUR.... . RES

Y6196< P 122 OZ4STA OZ3DIX 950326 TEST 12 !!!

As you can see in the listing, TEST 1+2+3+4 have been cleared from the list.

      BUT TEST 5+6+7+8 IS MISSING!!!!

If I try reading TEST 5 I get the content of TEST 9. If I try reading
TEST 7 I'll get TEST 11!
As you also can see, mail# 6193 is in dupe! Mail# 6194+5+6 are the same,
because of the MSG_PRIV-BUG.
If I now kill TEST 5+6+7+8, I can't read TEST 9+10+11+12, because the file
is missing!

Hope that I now have cleared up any confusion about this kind of missing
mail.

*.LST files DO NOT contain LF and CR! If they do, it is an error in the
file. *.LST files is one single line, witch TPK breaks into the msg. list
window. And textual characters are also binary ;-)

I try ;-)
With close to 19.000 personal mails (look at my header!) passing my TPK, I
have a good reason to keep using the same program as I used to....
