No, we did learn about 1776 and the 4th of July, just as we learnt about
the 14th July, Bastille day in France but they didn't really become a
republic until the late 19th century, 100 years later when they invented
their metric units and have been trying to impose them on the world since.

The natural measurements come from parts of the body and were used by the
ancient Mesopoamians who worked in base 60, like we still do with our
watches.

The length between your first and 2nd knuckle on your hand was called an
inch. the lengthe of your foot was a foot, there was also a hand = 4
inches, still used with horses, the forearm from the elboww to the tip of
the knuckle was a cubit, about 20 inches. Holding a piece of cloth from
the point of your chin to your outstretched hand gave you the yard. the
mile came from the Roman Miles= soldier where one passus, pace = 5 ft and
1000 passae equaled 1 Roman Mile. 220 yards gave them 1 Stadium, we still
use that but foreignors call it 200 meteres, 220 yds was also 1 Furlong, a
furrow lenth.

I am sure I have forgotten some ans some things mystify me like, why is an
American gallon 4/5ths of an imperial gallon ?

It dies all seem a lot more natural, though.
