Nice job! I went through the same problem a few months ago and I confirm all the steps you did.
Probably your KPC3p (like mine) was in KISS mode. Tera Term is a great tool to initialize the TNC after the cold reset.
I'm also happy to know that you are setting up packet radio in São Paulo.
