The 857 and 897 are very close, much closer than the 857 and 817. 
All have a working noise blanker which can't be said for the  706 
so are much more usable in the real world. 

The 857 I'm listening to right now has a hand feature for VHF, it 
can  be set so it listens on SSB and if you want to talk you  use 
the  microphone  (PTT) or if you want to call on CW you  use  the 
KEY. No mode switch, no frequency shifts, just work which ever is 
needed  so long as receiving with the SSB filter is  adequate.  I 
don't  find the DSP will drag a weak CW signal out of the  noise, 
but the optional 500 Hz mechanical filter will improve the S/N of 
the weak CW signal.

I liked my first 857 so well, I bought another.
