The 857 is essentially an 817 with a bigger PA. So why not buy a cheap CB
PA and make some switchable filters for it. That way you get a cheap way to
boost the power.

In recent times most of my QSOs have been on Yaesu equipment. I must admit
that I don't like it, the feel of the knobs and how the menus etc. works. I
much prefer Icom and Kenwood gear. So I'd buy a 706 over an 857. But I
still think fixing a chipbutty PA is the cheapest way to upgrade.
