Hi Terry and all,
Where have you beem man? High output lower consumption lamps have been
around for a long time only you haven't recognized them because you'll
not need a 500W lamp in the home. Industrial, yard and street lighting is
done with high intensity discharge (HID) mercury vapor lamps, many of
which have an internal coating to broaden the spectrum downward just like
an ordinary flourescent. Then there are high pressure sodium (HPS) lamps
usually used in street and lot lighting, both are very efficient and come
in lower wattage versions used for yard and security lighting. A 100W HPS
lamp will illuminate your yard in yellow daylight and won't attract bugs,
ideal for that back yard BBQ in summer. (;->) Seriously, theres your 100W
energy saving lamp you asked for only you'll need an appropriate fixture
with a ballast, unfortunately these are your original slow start lamps
and can be a bit annoying having to recycle after a short power
interruption but oh well, that's the nature of the beast.
On a lighter note 1000W HID lamps are commonly used for indoor growing of
marajuana so have fun with your new basement lighting scheme, just don't
get caught when the power company reports a sharp rise in consumption to
the police and be sure to ventilate through the roof, your neighbors
noses will wonder what you have in there.
