  Hi Andy and other interested readers.

  I  use a small SHARP three cornered file.  I file a  shallow  V  shaped
  groove  all round the ferrite rod,  at the place I  want  to  snap  it.

  When that is done I carefully,  using the thumbs under and each side of
  the  groove, and fingers over the rod,  again each side of the  groove,
  push up with the thumbs.

  Invariably I get a nice clean 'cut' with a nicely bevelled edge and the
  ferrite rod ready to use. Easier said than described. Regards and....
