Now this is a golden oldie, John. About 15 years ago when I first got my
ham radio license (only on 2m and up, I only did my CW exam a few years
later) I had no equipment and no antenna. A fellow ham was kind enough to
lend me an old 2m transceiver, but he had no antenna. Someone on FIDOnet
then sent me this exact same drawing (at least it looks like exactly the
same, including the "Bend both ends and solder" at the top and bottom). I
spent an afternoon cutting up a few lengths of ribbon cable before I had a
decent match, and then a few more days finding out the hard way that you
can't take a resonant length of ribbon cable and put it inside a 4/8" PVC
tube and still expecting your match to be spot on. :-)

I used that first antenna for about a year before I had money for a
vertical dualbander, and a few more years as a "vacation antenna". I now
have a roll-up version that I use for backpacking etc. It's like an old
friend. :-) It even performs reasonably well on 70cm. If there ever was a
simple, tested and proven design, this is it!
