Hi All,
I have been following the (age old) argument on the merits of various
programming languages and which is "best" with some amusement.
In all fairness this argument started in the early days of computing when
I was programming the Intel 4040 chips. (does anyone other than me
remember
them), and a great big amount of memory was 2Kbyte. I clearly remember the
arguments about the "betterness" of programming in assembler or machine
code.
One challenge that I had in the early days was to write a prom BASIC that
fitted into the 2k size proms that were then available. It is interesting
to note that the current Picaxe devices seem to have hit on an almost
identical instruction set and have the same limitations in the arithmetic
functions.
Sorry I'm rambling on a bit here, old age strikes again.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Well here's the challenge for today.
Lets ask the packet fraternity for a list of the programs that might be of
use to amateurs and by consensus pick one as the "challenge". I don't mean
rewrite f6fbb or anything like that, but rather a sensible highly useful
program of general technical use.
Then each proponent of the various languages could write code which meets
specified criteria in their language of choice.
Here are some of the criteria that might be used for judging, and
hopefully more might be suggested from other hams
Produce code which is portable to most popular operating systems
Produce a final .exe file
Compare how bloated the end .exe file is for each system.
Compare how well (how fast and correctly) the code solves the problem
Compare how good the GUI or equivalent is
Then the rest of us packeteers could sit in judgement and argue for years
to come.
Come on, put your money where your mouth is. Think of the accolades of the
ham fraternity if you win, (if you linux?)
