Hello Gary,
Shut the boiler down, bleed the pressure from the system, then remove the
makeup/return lines from the boiler and have a look. The return water and/or
fresh water makeup lines are supposed to reintroduce cold water below to water
level. They typically have a dip tube for this, and all return and fresh
water will re-enter the hot boiler below the water level. If cold return
water or fresh supply makeup water is introduced above the static boiler
water level, a sudden expansion occurs, causing banging you mentioned. If this
scenario is allowed to continue for some time, metal and/or joint fatigue
will occur that can result in broken pipes...or worse, a boiler explosion.
I've seen these return and makeup tubes either never get installed when
new, or fall loose down inside boilers, causing exactly what you mentioned.
Saw one case on a large commercial boiler for a manufacturing facility
have this problem, and the banging would cause 18" diameter steel boiler
outpet piping to jump up and down in the hangars as if made of rubber!
