Once again John,G8MNY has explained something I had wondered about. In
this case, CODFM. It was in 1996 that I was corresponding with a Dutch and
a German station about ATV and one of them mentioned camparisons between
various CTV systems e.g., PCM and FM which was popular at the time, CODFM
which I left unquestioned, thinking it would be explained in due course.

I didn't think it would be 10 years later,Hi!

In our area, at that time, we had three stations, a G4 a G6 and M1BZV who
were keen on FSTV. The G4 & G6 had put an off the shelf CCTV in a model
aeroplane and were using a madified sat Rx to receive it. Battery powered
and in the back of a van.

They lent me a tape of one of their trials. It was very good.Better, in
fact than the pics from in car cameras used in F1 at that time. Each time
they went under a bridge and on some sharp corners, the picture would
freeze or become pixelatedl. No guesses as to what they were using. I
don't know if it was compressed or not. It does seem to have improved
though,

The ATV was FM. The TX was built from a kit supplied by John's group, I
think.

Suddenly, both men disappeared, leaving the M1 with no one to send to. He
did try a higher AE and other frequencies but no one else in our area was
using FSTV. A few years earlier, I had heard hams in a nearby town, using
FSTV with CB for talkback. That was in the 80s and I don't know what
system was in use back then. I only heard them as I wasn't licenced at the
time and the CB was illegal, so I couldn't ask questions.

I never found out what happened to the G6 and G4. They vanished without
trace. We only have four stations slightly active in this area now, only
one is more than a 'black box' operator.

As for the D and the PA stations in 1996. I very much doubt if they are
around either. It is all a bit sad.

As for John's bull with the usual, excellent graphics, I have saved it to
a file and will probably print it to add to a book I keep.

Thanks again, mate.

All the best from - Ian, G0TEZ @ GB7FCR
