True but it misses the point of the exercise.

The object of the exercise was to determine if a core material whose
diameter is much smaller than the coil winding (thus leaving a LARGE
air gap) would render the core material ineffective.

As you well know - the inductances we are all likely to see or use
would have the core material very close in distance to the actual coil
windings.
