The interesting this is that the capacitor shaft is ALL plastic.

There's no metal shaft at all and it's the first time I've ever seen
a variable capacitor manufactured like that.

I suspect though as you mentioned that the grubscrew is in the field
of a lot of energy hence the burn.

Surprising really how much energy can be put across a few millimeters
of conductor.

The other strange thing is that the same antenna and tuner are on my
trolley mobile system with the antenna being about 18 inches from my 
face and I wear spectacles so how come they don't react ?

Weird!
