I went into humour mode on my previous reply Andy and thought you would
have lots of other sugestions.
I wonder is the plastic spindle black. If so it may be carbon loaded and
not a true insulator. Are you up for some tests?
Try a glue gun stick as a spindle should be able to file or carve down
each end to the right dia. just to try.
G0TSU goes into transformer theory. Hmm, we do not have a primary 'turn'
and if the grub screw is in a brass collar, like they usually are, that is
a shorted turn.
However the brass disc is the plate of a capacitor, another test.
Try a metal disc on a hot melt stub spindle just plugged into the hole and
see if you can get an RF burn off that.
