Hello programmers,
I was trying out different video modes today and decided
to see if there were any newer video modes than those listed in my old
reference books. I found that video mode 14 hex worked on my old 586 PC.

Mode 14 hex is a text mode by all appearances, with 132 characters across
the screen and 25 lines down the screen. In pixels this would be 1056 x 400
compared to 720 x 400 for the usual 80 column VGA text screen (mode 3 hex).

I made a small programme so that I could try it on other PCs. Strange
thing was that on all other PCs, it didn't work...just got the normal 80
column screen. Further investigation showed that mode 14 hex only worked
with the Cirrus Logic video card in the 586. This card has a CL-GD5430 video
chip set. I have two Cirrus Logic VGA cards which are not identical, but both
support video mode 14 hex. I think these are "PCI" video cards. They plug
into a cream coloured socket on the mother board. The contact spacing is
half that of the old ISA sockets.

Can anyone tell me something about the 14 hex mode in these VGA cards
please.

To Maurizio, IW6DFW...
Many thanks Maurizio for responding to my previous bulletin re setting
colours with the VGA card. Seems that the other programmers on packet radio
don't know much about this subject. I don't have the internet available
here Maurizio, but I will try to get the info from your web page somehow.
