I find it only takes about 10-15 minutes for XP/98. Actually you can use
GHOST (full name Norton GHOST by Symantec) to create an .GHO file that is
much smaller then the hard drive your imaging. GHOST recognises
FAT/NTFS/EXT2 (EXT3 is similiar).

WARNING: All data will be deleted!
It will restore the drive to where it was when you made the image, so if
you do it when there aren't any malware (after a new install) then there
won't be any. It would be as though you formatted the drive and
reinstalled everything so BACKUP first!

Also it prefers it if when backing up Windows that you shut down the
system (or restart) rather then going into HYBERNATE mode.

By the way Norton GHOST is a DOS program. It can be made to backup over a
network if you know how to configure the drivers.

You mentioned Linux and I don't know if it will work with dosemu though I
suspect not since it doesn't work with HIMEM.SYS loaded.
