In reply to Raplh's points:

Yes, ghost (there a few programs that do the same) is excellent for fixing
Windows "features" :-)

Do you know Ralph, I cant remember how long it takes as I used to bung
a CD with the image on it in the drive, start it running and wander off and
get a brew and come back later and it was done. Much quicker than reinstalling
Windows and your apps and data.

Well I get rid cookies when the browser is closed. Likewise my browser doesn't
hoover up the gunge off the net the way some browser do. But yes, you can use
it to snapshot your disk and restore quickly. You can do system backups and
restores in Win XP, but this backups everything.

Ghost for Linux... not needed. Linux, like Unix treats everything as a file.
So I can view my disk partition as a filesystem ( a collection of files ) or
just as a file. So to backup a partition to another you just type

dd -if=/dev/hda1 -of=/dev/hda2

To copy to a file the file must be mounted on another partition,

mount /dev/hda3 /mnt
dd -if=/dev/hda1 -of=/mnt/ghost.file

Good hey?

It's only Windows that makes things complex :-)

Do a 'man dd' on any Linux system to see how dd works.
