If you set each up with a different account, then you could use Windows
Messenger.

Again if you set each up with a different email address + Outlook, you could
send email via your ISP.
There was another MS utility which enabled instant pop up messaging (name
forgotten), but I had a bit of a struggle getting it to work. It might also be
worth checking for freeware and shareware utilities which do this.
