I believe that some *old* tube receivers incorporated the same technique
but for some reason it was never very popular.
Whilst it's easy for some of us to understand it's (simple) principles
and make it work for us, there are however many many stupid people who
can't even understand CTCSS on their modern rigs.
I sometimes wonder if manufacturers DO NOT include some features because
too many stupid people would complain about "bad performance" ;-)

I have never measured it, but I'd say a typical 1 s-point or less on
my IC-735 meter on 80m is typical performance.
Whatever the small attenuation the advantage gain is always preferable
to S9+30 of noise.
It works - trust me, I am keeping mine.
