The design for a cheap impromptu ATU from John,G8MNY, really did bring
back some memories.

We used to make the same things around 1980 - 81. About the only
difference was, we used 11 turns on the coil. 11 turns for 11 metres
seemed to be quite common in filters etc.

We didn't think of using the caps of toothpast tubes for tuning.I found a
supplier of small, cheap, red knobs.

We made the body out of a piece of aluminium tube, hammered square and
painted matt black.

We only used a SO239/PL259 combination, of course.

I used to sell them for a couple of quid for the cost of parts plus a
little bit for labour. The reason then was that everybody was unemplyed
and too poor to buy a real one.

Eventually, I saw them on sale at 'Eyeballs' up to a hundred miles away
(Lincoln), along with my ferrite rod, borrowed from a transistor radio and
painted red as a 'TVI stopper',Hi!.

NB. It became very difficult to buy ferrite rods after a while. Every
scrap
radio had been robbed and I think the factories were running out, such was
the demand. We always found ferrite rods easier to work with than ferrite
rings, cheaper too.

It set me wondering if John was ever a Breaker.

Very nice graphics as usual,John.
