Warren, don't confuse manual gearboxes with automatic.
I'm talking about manual shifting, with a fixed gear ratio. This is still
something usual in good old Europe, although considered unusual in the USA.
As said before, for 190 km/h = 120 miles per hour the engine runs with
about 6000 rpm, and the alternator doesn't blow any diodes or fuses.
Also the motor can stand this for hours without overheating. Going with
80 mph (130 km/h) ist just below average motorway speed...
So 2000 rpm are good for 40 mph (even less in lower gears). And the car will
still use less petrol than an american car with automatic gearbox at the same
speed, despite the slightly higher revs.
73, Patrick
P.S.:
> or you're confusing MPH with KPH, 80KPH = 60MPH,
80 km/h = 50 mph, not 60mph.
