That alternator probably was good for 50 or 60 amps. Cold head lamps that
run on 20 amps when hot would take about 320 amps initially and shut
down the alternator by killing the field excitation. That lamp inrush
current would have been supplied by the battery had it been connected."
I will not argue about the surge current required but I strongly suggest
to you that the alternator would suply nothing like 50 to 60 amps! In your
dreams maybe. I would be fairly surprised if even a modern car alternator
would supply that much.
