Hi Jeff and readers,
Last things first because it's unrelated. Yes, road rage has become a
major problem, but the solution is as simple as minding your own
business. You confronted the bad driver and got told off, you got off
lightly, but what did you expect? YOU started it man! The best defense is
keep yourself to yourself, don't make eye contact, and above all, don't
start anything or you're bound to get what you asked for!
As for your experiment, you forgot the major function of the battery. The
reason your electrical system failed when it was disconnected was the
regulator had lost it's reference and for all intents and purposes shut
down. It likely had a protection device that throttled it back much like
the SWR protection in MOSFET PA modules to protect the electrical system
from an overvoltage condition. Depending on the polarity of the devices
in the regulator one of two conditions will exist when reference voltage
is removed, full output or no output. After all it's a DC amplifier and
behaves like any other depending on forward or reverse bias.
Oh, consider yourself lucky with this one too, you could just as easily
fried every electrical device in the vehicle, NEVER disconnect the
battery with the engine running!
