John G8MNY touched on the *REAL* way to check your alternator output.

The answer of course is to measure the VOLTAGE across the battery.

There is quite a marked difference between the voltage of the battery when
being charged compared with when it is being discharged.

The actual voltage will vary depending on the state of charge, temp etc,
so it is impossible to give fixed voltage values.

Most car alarms use this phenomina, to detect the voltage drop when the
internal light comes on , and then sounds the alarm.

So the way to check if your alternator can give the required output at
tickover is to connect your voltmeter across the battery and just watch
the readings as you increase the load.
You can of course repeat the exercise with different engine speeds.

As Andy GM7HUD indicated, it is a complete NO-NO to disconnect the battery
when the engine is running.

The usual reason for a low (inadequate) output from your alternator is
blown diodes which can be caused by either using a non-regulated battery-
charger without disconnecting the battery terminals first, or disconnecting
the battery with the engine running :-((
