Lionel mentions the older English custom of driving with only parking lights
on. What I think Lionel mistook is that the the previous correspondance a
VK3 was refering to daylight driving. Lionel was refering to driving at night
on parking lights only.
On my first trip to the UK, I was appalled to nearly get run over by cars
without their lights on AT NIGHT !
The most dangerous situation was in a shopping area with plenty of shop
lights and some street lighting. The black taxis were nearly invisible.
Some years later they did wake up that you would survive if you turned your
lights on. When I was driving there on that occassion I got plenty of flashing
from others because I refused to drive with the lights out. I had a local with
me once who was convinced I was mad.
