Hi Barry and readers,
The battery van driver from the NRMA (Aussie version of AAA) did the
right thing by swapping the battery with a fully charged one. While I
explained it in another bull, to recap, charging a flat battery with the
engine alternator can easily overheat and destroy the alternator. It was
never designed for prolonged high output.
Now when jump starting (Remember the flat battery and alternator?) it's
advisable to keep the engine running in the supply vehicle but not
because of what many may think. You touched on it, the battery supplies
the cranking current as always, the alternator has nothing to do with it.
The reason to keep the engine running is if you should encounter a
stubborn engine and drain your battery as well. If you do that, how will
you restart YOUR car? (;->) Oh, need I say it's best to stave off this
condition by extinguishing the headlights and switch off all power
consuming devices? Once the cables are connected you can crank away in
the dark, it really doesn't matter.
