Hi Allen, Dick and readers,

In 1981 Ford was taking no chances with it's primitive electronics, 
FoMoCo was famous for lousy solid state. I can think of only this one 
case where disconnecting the battery while charging may be meaningful, 
otherwise it's a moot point I elaborated in another bull being forwarded 
with this lot.

I too blew the diodes in an alternator, likely for the same reason. The 
battery must be fully charged before starting the engine even if it will 
crank before full. A partly depleted battery (depending on charge level) 
will overload the alternator and burn it out with prolonged charging. It 
was only meant to "top off" the battery after cranking, not charge it, 
especially from a near flat condition. The thing to remember is the 
average passenger car doesn't come equipped with a "police car" 
alternator rated so it can supply emergency lights, radios, sirens and 
all that jazz.
