Hi John and readers,
I hope some may find the following comments useful.
The first circuit looks less confusing but has more components than
needed. If there were another (tertiary) winding or a center tapped 24V
(full wave rectifier configuration) secondary it would be a free running
oscillator and the driver chip wouldn't be needed. This is a common sort
of commercial design only they use torroidial transformers for
compactness. Still an excellent circuit I must admit.
There is an error, two actually in the second schematic. The phasing
marks were omitted and if one assumes the top to be start the feedback
winding is connected backward. If no phasing marks the top is always
considered start. Not an error, but if a torroid were used and the proper
Al value given it would be very compact indeed, a ferrite loopstick, even
those found in old pocket transistor radios are large by comparison. A
powdered iron core is much more efficient and far less likely to run into
sat on peaks too. Once again, an excellent circuit (for those having a
rare, vintage pocket radio they want to sacrifice on the altar of light,
hi).
"Why don't U send an interesting bul?"
I hope I have just now. (;->)
