I read John, G8MNy's bulletin about the advanced electric fence with freat
interest, for two reasons.
One is that, in the UK it would be illegal to have such a fence in any
area
open to the public. cf the case of the man who fitted one to his BMW after
it had been stolen a dozen times. Someone tried the door, got a shock,
took him to court, where he was fined a lot of money and went out and
bought a cheaper car as the only rememdy.
Technically. I was raised in a farming area where they were common. You
could hear them ticking and, as John says, it was roughly every 2 - 5 s.
However, they didn't contain transistors so how did they work?
I know that some came with a car battery seperate to the unit, which
normally took a dry battery and was far too small to contain a car
battery.
I always suspected that they contained a relay and, probably, just a large
capacitor, maybe with a resistor in series to give the C R time necessary
to slow down the switching. But the whole thing was only about 6" (15cm)
cubed.
I have mentioned them before. They were used by some farmers, particularly
those who supplied Rolls Royce ( an old British car manufacturer).
I did mention how my little brother wondered what would happen if he P....
on one. He found out and never repeated the experiment.
G0XXX, Eric, a ham in a rough part of Burnley, now silent key, fitted one
about one foot (30cm) below the inside of his fence so that the local
youths who came to vandalise and steal his aerials, got a very unpleasant
surprise as they climbed over his fence. Electric fences do bite through
jeans. It was illegal but the police turned a blind eye as the same youths
used to smash up police cars.
I know he did make it but he never went into details about how.
Thanks again, John. May the sun shine on you when you go DXing from the
centre of that field.
