Hello , especially om Dick

Charging Car Batteries...while still connected to the
vehicle.
Foist...it always good to follow the original makers/ car
maker/battery maker or elses instructions given with the
vehicle in question.

One Safe way to build/connect a Charger would be : Fit the
charger input - presumably 220Vac with an approbiate VDR
(Voltage dependend resistor) and the output side ~ 18V or so
with an approbiate VDR , say 18-24 Volts.
When connecting - do negative -assuming it is Chassis/Ground
- first to discharge any built up static. Now then, the
charger must be , either have neg. connected to earth
(Direct or thru a Resistor , say 500K). Or, best , when
parking at Garage , or place of Charge , use a ground -strap
for grounding the Chassis first.
This is standard procedure for Airline Tankers for instance,
to prevent premature burnup of aircraft b4 crash...

Otherwise ... Basically it depends of the Cars electronic
makeup. The Mazda I am using here has been abused while
charging. Sparks and up to 15 V battery voltage are no
problem...repeatedly.
On the other side of makes , a citroen (Lemon) shorted its
Alternator diodes out , and with a slight audible plop it
blew a small printed circuit board which carried the Battery
connetions to the alternator. This was approx. 2 min . after
stopping engine and getting out. Never mind more subtle ,
say computer electronics. So far I have only seen erratic
behaviour from Electronic anti-theft devices , which
couldn't decide to chime the horn when activated/disactivated
...My make should be good between 6 and 16 volts...But
chiming is erratical. The Flasher lamps are functional.

So , some systems can handle everything thrown at them ,
others are build with money saving attitude. Unfortunately
you will not get the relevant information with purchase.

Result : play it safe , install some cheap VDR's, discharge
any static first...and hope for the best.
