Hello Ian and others.
You are right, Ian, (G0TEZ) the old magnetos had permanent U shaped magnets
supplying the magnetic field, and a wound rotor with a primary and secondary
winding. The EHT secondary was connected to a brass slip-ring, or sometimes
a brass button, and a carbon brush collected the EHT for the sparkplug.
The rotor also carried breaker points that switched the primary in sync
with the piston TDC.
That old memory of yours is still working.... part time! (Since age 3?)
73. Dick. VK3ABK.
