Hi Ian and readers,
OK, you feel thick so I hope this doesn't make you feel dense too.(;->)
The magneto never rotated or the wiring would get tangled. A magnet or
magnets were imbedded in the flywheel and passed the poles of the "coil"
as it rotated. As for aeroplanes having two per cylender, they also had
two spark plugs. I suppose it would come in handy if one should fail but
that wasn't the purpose actually. Two spark plugs are better than one so
to speak when you consider the head and crown shape, one on each side
provided an even flame front. Remember it was an early design, the shapes
are now tailored for the type of engine to do the same thing.
Back in grade school I brought in the output transformer from an old
radio and a flashlight battery. Out on the playground I would get the
other kids to hold one primary (now secondary) lead in each hand and
swipe the others across the battery producing a pretty good but harmless
shock. They kept coming back for more so I gathered them in a circle
holding hands and zapped them all at once. This caught the attention of a
teacher who confiscated the transformer and battery but no great loss, I
had plenty of old radio parts lying around at home.
YUP! True story but I can't say the same for your magnetoized masochist
since you won't tell the tale. (;->) Then maybe the 5-10KV version is
just a bit too strong for packet.
