Hi and thanks for reading.
Here in the U.K. I have bought one of these cheap 4 stroke OHV petrol
generators before last winter, just in case the predicted power cuts came.

It is basicly a 2KW generator, 2.3KW Max, 230V @ 10A. Noise 73dbA @ 4M,
12Ltank, 83kg.

But testing it this month I had difficulty starting it, no spark!

The ignition circuit is made more complex than most as the oil warning switch
uses the same wire as the timing pulse!

The ignition circuit as far as I can tell doing reverse engineering is this...

                         D1 STOP

 D1,2 & 3 = 1N4002, Q1 & Q2 are SCRs Q2 is larger tab type.
 C2 is a small cap 100pF?

This is the way I think it works....
What is strange is that the magneto produces -ve volts as TDC approaches, & the
Q1 SCR short this out to produce an ign pulse, when a timing pulse occurs. This
builds up a charge on C1 that will light the Warning Neon unless SCR Q2 is
triggered due to the C2 DC overcoming zener ZD.

On low oil tests I did when new, if the neon lights for too long the ignition
is killed.

To get it going I temporarily shorted R4.

Any comments on the action of this circuit would be much appreciated.

MODS
By the way although the generator is only rated at 2KW due to its poor speed
regulator, but with the G8MNY mods on the governor it does 234V @ 2.5KW & 220V
@ 3KW with the carburettor now able to instantly go to full throttle due to
load current. A test with a high starting current 1.5KW induction motor lawn
mower I could not tell the difference to real mains.
Also I have fully shielded the spark plug & that reduced the VHF QRM 40dB,
eg S1 @ 30cms instead of S9++ @ 3M.
