Thank you Ruud for your excellent explanation. We learnt the names of
layers of the atmosphere at school but, by the time I became a radio ham
at the age of 48, no one had ever heard of those layers.
Appleton was Knighted for his work on the ionosphere.
It's not much use being Sir Edward Appleton when everyone forgets you by
the end of the century.
Appleton conducted his experiments with several people. One of them was
called John Logie Baird. Another man who was forgotten.
