It's funny how some questions on packet never get answered despite there
still being a lot of experts about.
No one has ever answered my quastion: "What has heavy water got to do with
the manufacture of an atomic bomb?"
Starting on the 19th November 1942, commandos tried to destroy the Norske
Hydro Electric plant, which was being used by the Germans to produce Heavy
Water, which "was necessary for the Nazi Atom Bomb."
Warren WA2VXA, criticised me for saying that the H Bomb was a two stage
process. O.K. Warren, yes, an Atomic bpmb does use a chemical explosive
trigger to make its U 235 or Plutonium reach critical mass (1Kg).
Either a 'gun and target' as in 'Little Boy; dropped on Hiroshima, or
a hollow ball of explosive which is lined with fissile material and
implodes, thus going critical and going bang. This was the system used in
'Fat Joyce', named after Robert oppenheimer's secretary and was dropped on
Nagasaki. Most Atomic bombs I#ve seen sice look more like 'fat Joyce' but
the technology involved in 'Little Boy' is so simple that the thought of
terrorists getting hold of U 235 or Plutonium, quite scares me.
It sounds as though Warren and one other, know about using an atomic bomb
to trigger the fusion of Heavy Hydrogen into Helium to create an H bomb.
All I asked in the first place was "why do they keep saying that the Nazis
must be working on an Atom bomb as they were making heavy water?"
If they had had enought time to complete their two stage A 10 and send it
to New York, I've a feeling that the Americans would have been rather
surprised. A fireball 20 miles across, that IS a big atom bomb!
I'm still wondering what happened to Much, the miller's son BTW.
