Here are some of the answers to Ian's questions:

 1. Sir Victor Edward Appleton (1892 - 1965) Nobel Prize 1947

He investigated the characteristics of the upper atmosphere and
discovered a layer of the ionosphere which was named after him.

 2. Lord Rutherford (1971 - 1937) Nobel Prize 1908

He studied radioactivity, coined the names of alpha and beta rays,
found that radioactive substances decay exponentially with time and
invented the well known model of the atom as a miniature solar system.

 3. Information about building H-Bombs is of course classified.
(Don't remember it well anyway. Haven't built one for years)

 4. Robert Hooke (1635 - 1703)

He discovered that the lengthening of an elastic spring is
proportional to the applied force if the force remains small enough.
This is taught to 14 year old students in the form F = D * s
    where F = force; s = lengthening; D = stiffness of spring.
